Because we spoke yesterday about the path to enlightenment, I would like to mention another step today – serenity – a state of being calm, peaceful, untroubled; and is the serenity of mind that I want to elaborate.

James Allen wrote a small book entitled: “As a Man Thinketh” and in this book, the last chapter is dedicated to Serenity which he describes it as “calmness of mind, one of the beautiful jewels of wisdom; the result of long and patient effort in self-control.”

A serene mind gives one the ability to be quick and calm at the same time, or better expressed by the Latin saying: “festina lente”. A serene mind is a characteristic of highly successful people and James Allen says again: “The strong calm person is always loved and revered. He’s like a shade-giving tree in a thirsty land and a sheltering rock in a storm.”

Reinholt Niebuhr gave thanks through the Serenity Prayer: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.” Acceptance and action are the highest attributes of a serene mind. You know the difference between what can and what cannot be changed; accepting what is and moving towards what is to be.

A serene mind gives you confidence, influence, and power for good. There is no greater wealth than peace of mind. Being mentally and spiritually at peace and in sync with your emotions is to have enough knowledge and understanding to keep yourself calm in the face of discord and stress.

To achieve a serene mind is to give thanks from within, to live from a gratitude state, to be grateful not for what you have but for what you are. Practicing acceptance and being kind to others as they are your reflection. Start your day in calm rituals like meditation and reading, learn to watch your responses, don’t take things personally – if you can treat people as you’d want to be treated you can imagine people treat you how they want to be treated… it’s not about you, it’s about them; it’s not you who they attack, is themselves.

Aim for the serene mind and your power to make good decisions, to act in the right direction and to achieve your goal will feel natural.
